The dentine at the root of the tooth, not the crown, where the enamel. If you have tenderness due to exposure of the roots, then the dentin is exposed. These toothpastes "band" the tublules, preventing sensitivity.
If there is an opening in the enamel, which is most likely to be and should be treated professionally.
